Following Wordle’s continued success, The New York Times has announced another title to be added to its games catalog – and it’s mostly about math. In Digits, players can add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. You can play the beta version of the game for free online now.
In Digits, players are given a target number that they must match. Players are given six numbers and can add, subtract, multiply or divide them to get as close to the goal as possible. However, not every number has to be used, so this game should put your math skills to the test as you combine the numbers and try to create the right equations to get as close to the target number as possible.
Players will receive a five-star rating if they exactly match the target, a three-star rating if they manage to get within 10 of the target, and a one-star rating if they manage to get within 25 stars. Currently, players have also access to five different puzzles with increasing numbers. I solved today’s puzzle and found it to be a fun numbers-based game that should appeal to inquisitive minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other The New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article introducing Digits and detailing The New York Time Games team’s development of the game, The Times reports that the team will employ the free beta to fix bugs and evaluate whether it’s worth moving on to a more busy phase of development, “in which the game is coded and The designs are finalized.” So play Digits while you can, because The New York Times may abandon the project if it doesn’t get the desired response.
