It was good to get back on track after today’s victory after yesterday’s defeat. Admittedly, I was helped by this Connection puzzle, which was on the easier side, with four relatively uncomplicated groups and not too many diabolical red herrings to deal with.

However, there were a few of them – especially in the purple group of DISHWASHER CYCLES. I almost guessed it at first, but I wasn’t sure which of the six possible answers made up the correct quadrant; the final solutions are NORMAL, FAST, RINSE and DENITICATE, but I thought FOOTH and FAST were also possible. And no, you don’t get dishwashers with a MONEY setting, but at the time I didn’t know it was a connection, only that it probably involved some appliance – maybe a washing machine…

I finally worked it out by selecting a few easier groups first and then solving them by default at the end, as is usually the case.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is basic, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can undiscovered answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
