NYT Connections Today (Match #401) – Answers
The answers to today’s Connections, game #401, are…
- YELLOW: IN A BAD MOOD CROSS, SHORT, DANGEROUS, MALIGENT
- GREEN: EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH, PILOT, PRELIMINARY, TRIAL
- BLUE: BROADWAY MUSICIANS’ BEGINNINGS VIOLINIST, JERSEY, KINKY, HAPPY
- PURPLE: PETER ___ MR., PARKER, PIPER, RABBIT
- My ranking: Moderate
- My result: Perfect
Today I was kind of hanging on the Y-words, expecting some of them to go together, but I couldn’t find a connection. It turns out that three of them formed a group – unfortunately that group was “Broadway musicals”, which is the least likely connection I’ll ever find. Seriously, I’d have a (much) better chance of finding a particle physics connection than this.
Anyway, that was the blue group, and that was the one I had to solve by default. It took me a while to get started, but once I figured out that EXPLORATORY, PILOT, PRELIMINARY, and TRIAL were the same thing, I went. Then I noticed the purple group “Peter something,” leaving only the SHORT, CROSS, SURLY, and TEST yellow groups to finish.
How did you do today? Email me and let me know.

- GREEN: ELEVATION BLUFF, FRONT, APPEARANCE, SHOW

- PURPLE: ALCOHOL BOTTLE SIZES FIFTH, HOLDER, LITER, PINT
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It requires you to find groups of four items that have something in common, with each group having a different level of difficulty: green is simple, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite strenuous, and purple is usually very strenuous.
The positive is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one, since you’ll be able to answer it by elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to surprise you with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hide answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Games Page on your desktop computer or mobile device.
