Either Connections was a lot harder this week or I lost my enthusiasm completely. Maybe both. For the third day out of four, I failed to solve the game and it was my worst performance to date as I failed to find a single answer.
I’ll blame some of it on the NYT’s trickery; this first yellow group could easily have included ROD, SCREW and perhaps HOOK. The answer to the “hardware items” question is annoyingly vague: A SCREW is as much a piece of hardware as a SCREW. Likewise, the FISHING FISHING FISHING TYPE is obviously a piece of fishing equipment, so it could/should have been green. Yes, I know part of the challenge is figuring out which words go where, but the choices in this case seem arbitrary. I might as well have just been grumpy because I didn’t figure it out. I hope so.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is basic, yellow is slightly more challenging, blue is often quite challenging, and purple is usually very challenging.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unknown answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
