NYT Connections Today (Match #431) – Answers
The answers to today’s Connections, game #431, are…
- YELLOW: WIDTH RANGE, RANGE, RANGE
- GREEN: SECOND HALF SUPPLEMENT, ADAPT, PARTNER, PARTICIZE
- BLUE: BEER, FAMILY Donut, NATTY, SIERRA, STELLA
- PURPLE: WORDS AFTER “PAY” CHECK, DIRTY, MAN, PHONE
- My rating: Moderate
- My result: 1 error
Confusion is a constant threat in Connections, which is one reason I always shuffle my answers as soon as I start the game. The NYT tends to put words next to each other at first to make it seem like they fit together when they don’t.
Today I guessed MATE, BUD, PAL, PARTNER as a group and was quite shocked when they didn’t form one answer. But it just so happens that MATE and PARTNER were instead part of the “Second Half” group (with COMPLEMENT and MATCH), while BUD went to “Beers” and PAL to the final “Words after “Pay”” group.
Still, you can make three mistakes in Connections (the fourth is a loss), so I had enough guesses to solve this relatively arduous part of the game. I don’t think I would have gotten the blue group if it hadn’t been for the default – I’d never heard of NATTY or SIERRA as beers – but the purple wasn’t as bad as it sometimes is, so I got there eventually.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It requires you to find groups of four items that have something in common, with each group having a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite demanding, and purple is usually very demanding.
The positive is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one, since you’ll be able to answer it by elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to surprise you with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hide answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Games Page on your desktop computer or mobile device.
