The answers for today’s Connections game, game #504, are…

  • YELLOW: SASSY NICE, FRESH, INTELLIGENT, SMART
  • GREEN: ENVIRONMENT AIR, FEELING, MOOD, QUALITY
  • BLUE: UNITS BAR, BEAUTIFUL, LUXURY, MOLE
  • PURPLE: SMALL ___ MERMAID, PRINCE, RASCALE, HATCH

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My result: 1 hint

This is quite a arduous Connection puzzle that has nothing to do with Will Smith, even though the first four words in the grid are FRESH PRINCE BEL AIR. Of course, the first thing I do every time I play is employ the shuffle feature to remove any erroneous NYT clues that may be there. I’m not sure if this will work because seeing these four words in different places may suggest a connection to me – so I have to look carefully at the board both before and after shuffling. I take it all too seriously, yeah

Surprisingly, today I was the first to solve purple; there the empty LITTLE group (TRAMP, PRINCE, MERMAID, RASCALS) was quite obvious, while the blue group of BAR, BEL, LUX and MOLE was much more arduous. Both yellow and green were quite arduous for the supposedly easiest groups, so it took me a while to find all the answers.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is basic, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can concealed answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
