The answers for today’s Connections game, #475, are…

  • YELLOW: COMPOSITE MIXED, MIXED, CROSSED, HYBRID
  • GREEN: SETTLE BOX, PLANT, STICK, WEDGE
  • BLUE: ITEMS IN THE MONOPOLY BOX ACTS, HOTEL, HOUSE, TOKEN
  • PURPLE: ___ CONTROL BIRTH, CRUISE, QUALITY, REMOTELY

  • My rating: Easy
  • My result: 1 error

My streak now stands at 23, which is a far cry from when I failed to solve eight Connection puzzles in 15 days. It was, admittedly, quite straightforward. I made one mistake in guessing that HOTEL, HOUSE, LODGE, and COMPOUND were places to live, but when that turned out to be wrong, I looked again and saw a COMPOSITE connection that connected BLEND, COMPOUND, CROSS, and HYBRID.

Meanwhile, HOUSE and HOTEL went with DEED and TOKEN to the MONOPOLY themed group, and I also solved the supposedly hardest purple group, which was one of the NYT’s favorite blank___ replies.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more challenging, blue is often quite challenging, and purple is usually very challenging.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unrecognized answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
