NYT Connections today (game #538) – answers
The answers for today’s Connections game, #538, are…
- YELLOW: DANCE STYLES JAZZ, MODERN, SWING, TAP
- GREEN: STEAL LIFT, HAND, POCKET, MOVE
- BLUE: WORK WELL ACE, Crush, Nail, ROCK
- PURPLE: ___BALL FIELDS CURVE, QUICK, ARTICULATED, SCREW
- My rating: Moderate
- My result: 2 errors
Days where I solve purple are not very common, so I was content to WIN it today. Or maybe I should say it ACE. Either Crush or LOVE. Except no, this group – PERFORM WELL – was the blue one that I defaulted to, although I think I would have it if I had to.
Instead, purple is ___BALL PITCHES, with CURVE, FAST, KNUCKLE, and SCREW, and despite previous complaints about how regularly the NYT includes baseball or other mostly US-exclusive sports in Connections, I somehow stumbled upon this one. Admittedly, it belongs to the easier purple groups; Before I got it, I made a few wrong guesses because SCREW hadn’t occurred to me, but the other three are well known and also featured in my favorite sport, cricket.
Meanwhile, both yellow and green were quite simple, making the game generally accessible.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is simple, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
It’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unknown answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
