Published:

The first of two Connections weekend puzzles is not too complex. As usual, the NYT threw out some misleading leads, and the purple group is always complex, but there’s nothing out of the ordinary here.

What should you do after you finish? Of course, play more word games. I also have daily Wordle hints and answers, Strands hints and answers, and Quordle hints and answers articles if you need lend a hand with those.

The answers to today’s Connections, game #391, are…

  • YELLOW: BIOLOGICAL BUILDING ELEMENTS ATOM, CELL, MOLECULE, PROTEIN
  • GREEN: SHOPPING FOR A CHILD BOTTLE, COT, CAROUSEL, RATTLE
  • BLUE: OBJECTS PLAYED AS INSTRUMENTS JUG, SAW, SPOONS, GRATER
  • PURPLE: ___ TAG DOG, FREEZE, PHONE, PRICE

  • My ranking: Easy
  • My result: 1 error

I have a question: what is FREEZE TAG? Actually, I have a second one: what is PHONE TAG? Is this a reference to devices like Apple’s AirTags? I’m surprised.

But either way, it doesn’t matter because they were part of the purple group, and by the time I got to this one, I had already solved the other three. Plus ca change.

Yellow was particularly straightforward today, with ATOM and MOLECULE standing out right away. I then solved the blue, although I made one mistake by playing BOTTLE instead of JUG as an OBJECT PLAYED AS INSTRUMENTS. Technically, I wasn’t wrong – after all, you can play the bottle. But this time it wasn’t correct. CRIB, MOBILE, BOTTLE, RATTLE for “baby shopping” were also pretty straightforward, meaning the purple group and those puzzling tags were solved by default.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It requires you to find groups of four items that have something in common, with each group having a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.

The positive is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one, since you’ll be able to answer it by elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of breathing room.

It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to surprise you with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hide answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Games Page on your desktop computer or mobile device.
