The answers for today’s Connections game, game #512, are…

  • YELLOW: EQUIP EQUIPMENT, EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, STORAGE
  • GREEN: INDIVIDUALITY BEING, CHARACTER, EGO, ME
  • BLUE: FURNITURE Chest, console, dressing table, wardrobe
  • PURPLE: APOSTROPHE WORDS REMOVED CANT, ID, SHELL, WERE

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My result: 1 hint

A good strategy for Connections is (of course) to focus on any words that have narrow possible links to others. What I mean by this is that some have multiple possible connections; a word like STOCK may appear before MARKET or after BEEF; they can be combined with other words meaning LINE or BLOOD, or with words meaning TRUST. Or, as here, it may stand for EQUIPMENT and be grouped with SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT and EQUIPMENT.

CANT, on the other hand, is a relatively sporadic word that really only has a few very narrow associations with anything. Staring at it for a moment, it occurred to me that one of them was the lack of an apostrophe. When I thought about it, I noticed SHELL, WERE and ID (I’D) and resolved the purple group. The others joined quite quickly once the hardest group was found.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is uncomplicated, yellow is slightly more hard, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you off balance with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can concealed answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
