Does it matter how you beat Connections as long as you do it? Probably not, but it’s more satisfying to answer because you know what it is, not because you got lucky. This happened to me today with the purple group ASSOCIATED PRINCIPLES IN CHInese Philosophy and it’s very good that it happened.
I solved blue (SHIP PARTS), which was incredibly simple for that color, and yellow (ACQUIRE), but I had already wasted one guess on the green group, BIG GROUP. For some reason I put DECK with CROWD, FLOCK and HOST when the final answer was SEA, and I didn’t yet realize what the connection was here beyond “groups with a lot of stuff” and I thought DECK there was like a “deck of cards” . Anyway, DECK stopped working because it appeared in blue, so I really should have noticed the green connection and moved on.
Instead, after burning, I looked at the other words and decided that maybe they were part of some “opposite” combination: YANG (and yin), MALE (and feminine), LIGHT (and obscure). I wasn’t sure what the opposite of EXPANSIVE was (maybe narrow?), but I decided to include it anyway and revealed the purple group. Great! Except, of course, I made the wrong connection. I guess everyone counts after all…

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is simple, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you off balance with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hidden answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
