Today I learned that the word TITLE means a very compact part, actually a dot, POINT or DOT as used in Connections today. And then I thought it was a misspelling – perhaps intentional – of the TITLE. This ignorance on my part cost me the guess as I thought BALL would be part of this group instead; Don’t laugh, at least it has the same shape!
This was supposedly the easiest of today’s four groups, but none of them could actually be described as such. Green – DANCE PARTY – wasn’t too bad, but FORMAL and HOP aren’t terms I’ve heard often in the UK, where I am, at least not in the last half-century – so I had to rely on my knowledge of American TV and movies.
Fortunately, the IPHONE MESSAGE TAPBACK RESPONSES feature was a bit easier for a tech journalist like me, but that won’t necessarily be the case if you’re using Android instead. Purple, as always, was just complex.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more complex, blue is often quite complex, and purple is usually very complex.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can undiscovered answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
