- YELLOW: DEPARTURE BETTER, eclipse, surpass, TOP
- GREEN: PICNIC ACCESSORIES BASKET, BLANKET, COOLER, DISHES
- BLUE: INDIANA JONES COSTUME PARTS BOMBER, FEDORA, BAG, WHIP
- PURPLE: RHYMES OF THE NAMES OF US PRESIDENTS PAGANIC, SMARTER, VIXEN, EXPANDED
- My rating: Hard
- My result: 3 errors
Oh my God, today’s Connections was tough for me.
Maybe if RHYMES OF US PRESIDENT NAMES had included Chump I would have made it there, but they weren’t the only group I struggled with mentally.
The third time I managed to combine BOMBER, FEDORA, SATCHEL and WHIP, but not because I thought they had anything to do with INDIAN JONES COSTUME PARTS – to be straightforward, I forgot about his bag first.
I unconsciously thought they were accessories named after a person, based on the incorrect assumption that Fedora was a eminent person in the 1920s. In fact, the history of the Fedora is much more intriguing, culminating in a 2016 article that described the fedora hat as “the most hated fashion accessory in the world.” Yes, this is the same year that a certain red hat rose to prominence.

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more challenging, blue is often quite challenging, and purple is usually very challenging.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
It’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unrecognized answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
