NYT Connections today (game #550) – answers
The answers for today’s Connections game, #550, are…
- YELLOW: THINGS THAT SOUND LIKE “T” TEA, TEE (GOLF), TEE (SHIRT), TI (MUSICAL NOTE)
- GREEN: OBJECTS WITH TEETH COMB, GEAR, SAW, LOCK
- BLUE: GENTLE VOWS FUDGE, Oh my gosh, NUTS, RATS
- PURPLE: PARTS OF THE RIVER BANK, BED, DELTA, MOUTH
- My rating: Impossible
- My result: Fail
Oh come on, NYT! Seriously? It’s just too arduous to even remotely count as fun. Will someone solve this today? Am I just stupid? Pictograms are okay as a concept, and yes, it’s a nice change from the normal Connections procedure, a bit jarring – but if you’re going to do it, at least make it a little easier!
Or maybe I was just unlucky because I was on track with some of today’s groups. There were just so many options that could work that I was groping in the murky.
For example, I immediately noticed that SAW, ZIPPER, GEAR, and COMB were all OBJECTS WITH TEETH, but so was MOUTH, so I included it twice and lost a few guesses. The same GENTLE OATH; I had GEEZ (Gs), RATS and NUTS, but I thought the fourth was D’OH, as in Homer Simpson, based on the image of the musical score with the word DO written on it. The problem was that the arrow was pointing to a different note, and I don’t read music, so I never realized it was actually TI, and went with a different group instead; the real final answer was FUDGE.
So actually, yeah, let’s talk about some of these photos, because how was anyone supposed to know that that piece on top of the ice cream was FUDGE? It could be anything! It may be chocolate or strawberry sauce, it is not a high resolution photo. As for DELTA… I mean triangle.
I will never play this game again (until tomorrow).

What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is uncomplicated, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
It’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hidden answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
