The answers for today’s Connections game, #587, are…

  • YELLOW: LUST DRIVE, IMPULSE, itching, drive
  • GREEN: BARBA SPINE, STRAINT, STICKER, THORN
  • BLUE: RECORDING INFORMATION ALBUM, ARTIST, LABEL, SONG
  • PURPLE: ROTATE ___ Corner, side, tables, tide

  • My rating: Hard
  • My result: 2 errors

There are situations in Connections where there is no common theme noticeable in more than a few of the 16 words. Other times we are faced with an excess of similarities, as was the case today.

I fought two groups. I immediately thought that vinyl records were a link to the blue RECORD INFO, but they also contain SPINE, so I initially put it there.

Meanwhile, I wasted another mistake thinking that SPUR – on the spur of the moment – belongs to URGE, IMPULSE and ITCH, when instead it is part of the BARB group with STICKER, THORN and the aforementioned SPINE.

These minor issues are, of course, why Connections is so much fun to play.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is uncomplicated, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you off balance with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unknown answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
