The answers for today’s Connections game, game #856, are…

  • YELLOW: Captivating ABSORB, ENGAGE, HOLD, OCCUPY
  • GREEN: SUMMARY BRIEF, SUMMARY, CONSTRUCTION, OVERVIEW
  • BLUE: STOP CONTROL, CURB, STAND, THREE
  • PURPLE: ANIMALS MINUS START LETTER Anther, Easel, Hark, LAMA

  • My rating: Hard
  • My result: 3 errors

When you make two mistakes, it’s a good idea to stop and refocus. But after doing it today, I ended up getting a third “1”.

There were so many crossover words that could have gone into several groups that I think I can forgive myself for lumping HOLD with CURB, STAUNCH, and STEM, and ABSORB with DIGEST, REVIEW, and ENGAGE.

In fact, the easiest group – if your brain is wired to see such things – was ANIMALS MINUS STARTING LETTER. Congratulations if you noticed this before going through the remaining tiles.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is uncomplicated, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can concealed answers.

You can play it for free via Enjoy the gaming site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
