The answers for today’s Connections game, #895, are…

  • YELLOW: LITTLE TIME DAB, FALL, SPLATCH, TOUCH
  • GREEN: SAILOR SALTY DOG, SKIPPER, SPRING, TAR
  • BLUE: TROPICAL FRUITS/VEGETABLES BITTER MELON, Chayote, DURIAN, SOURSOP
  • PURPLE: ____ BARGAIN BIG, PLEASE, RAW, SWEET

  • My rating: Hard
  • My result: 2 errors

I wasted two mistakes trying to put together the group that became LITTLE BIT. My first idea was to apply a compact amount of something – so instead of TOUCH I had SWAB, then I replaced it with TAR before finally realizing the point.

SALTY DOG was the tile that unlocked the green group. I’ve always liked this term: Quint (Robert Shaw) w Jaws being the embodiment of one. Salty Dog is a gnarled and bearded, half-human, half-wool sweater person who desperately needs a bath, but whose superpower is his knowledge of sailing.

I got the blue group thanks to DURIAN, which is a type of fruit that is eaten for a challenge (hence its nickname – vomiting fruit), but I’m annoyed that I didn’t see today’s very easily available purple group. Bravo if you did it.

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can undiscovered answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
