New Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards have been officially revealed and they are brutal. The RTX 5090 will cost $2,000 and requires a recommended 1 kW power supply, which is roughly equivalent to running a belt sander continuously. The newest line of GPUs is Nvidia is rushing to meet demand in the current AI rat race.

New GPUs have been revealed that promise to take PC gaming platforms to the next level on stage at CES 2025 on Monday evening by CEO Jensen Huang. You’re probably familiar with DLSS, Nvidia’s upscaling technology that squeezes even better resolutions at higher frame rates from existing compute resources, but the company is now also touting RTX Neural Shader shaders that will utilize machine learning to compress textures and unleash even more power computational time for other things.

Both the 5080 and 5090 models will be available later this month, while the 5070 and 5070 Ti models will ship in February. Here are the prices:

  • GeForce RTX 5070 – $550
  • GeForce RTX 5070Ti – $7
  • GeForce RTX 5080 – $1,000
  • GeForce RTX 5090 – $2,000

The most critical thing to note is that Nvidia promises gigantic results even for a low-end budget card. All cards are expected to be on average twice as quick as their predecessors, and Huang even claimed that this year’s $550 RTX 5070 will be as effective in practice as the previous $1,600 RTX 4090, apparently thanks to machine learning and other optimizations.

At the top, Nvidia showed a chart promising to double the performance of the RTX 4090 compared to the newer (and only $400 more high-priced) RTX 5090 in games like Alan Wake 2 AND Black Myth: Wukong. The company even showed Cyberpunk 2077 runs at over twice the frame rate with full ray tracing enabled, because you can never have too many frames when navigating Night City’s treacherous underworld.

While the 5090 is a powerful computer, it’s not as powerful a gigantic boy as its predecessor. The founding version of the 4090 was a three-slot card and weighed over five pounds. The 5090 will only have two slots, allowing it to fit into more compact PCs at launch.
