No Rest for the Wicked’s combat gets more brutal, Crucible gets a facelift, and the latest update brings home stray animals

Today is a substantial day for No Rest for the Wicked, the action RPG from Moon Studios. The stunning fantasy game has been in Steam Early Access for a little over three months, and while updates were initially quick and furious, things have slowed down a bit.

This was intentional, as the developer moved into a phase of development where they focused on working on bigger features rather than dealing with smaller (but critical) issues that came up post-launch.

The latest update is the first to appear after this change in priorities.

The Crucible update brings recent content to the game while also introducing major changes to the mechanics. As the name suggests, this game has a weighty focus on the endgame No Rest for the Wicked, Crucible.

The flow of the mode has completely changed, and now leans even more towards the roguelite inspiration. The update triples the number of random rooms you can encounter, changes the look of the area, adds a recent Echoes system, and introduces a recent vendor.

Echoes are a system that lets you customize your runs. They’re a collection of buffs, debuffs, and modifiers that you can choose from, effectively allowing you to specialize in certain types of builds in Crucible itself. This is intended to add variety to the runs in the mode. Echoes can be activated using Traces, a recent currency dropped by enemies in the middle.

Seneschal is a recent vendor in Crucible, and this is where you can spend your Gloamseed (also dropped in Crucible). The vendor sells Fallen Embers, refined resources, and can also upgrade your weapons. What’s more fascinating is that Seneschal will even be able to unlock features in Crucible in the future.

The latest update also introduces a recent enemy faction: The Gloam. For now, you’ll encounter them in the Crucible, but future updates will expand their reach to the rest of the world. You’ll know you’re fighting one because they have a bioluminescent glow, a result of their Pestilence infection.

If you’ve been playing No Rest for the Wicked and never tried Crucible, you’ll be elated to know that you can now enter it much earlier. You can now enter it after accepting Spoken & Unspoken from Elsa, which can be done after completing the first campaign quest.

Beyond Crucible, this update also brings major changes to combat. Combat is now more vigorous with recent visuals that better convey the power of each strike. This even extends to the mechanics, as you can now freeze and shatter enemies, tear them apart, and rip them apart (depending on the weapon you’re using).

And that’s not all, the update even expanded many regions of the game with recent areas and added stray animals for you to pet! And thanks to all the performance updates the game has received, No Rest for the Wicked is now Steam Deck verified.

Moon Studios has revealed that it will soon be sharing a more detailed Early Access roadmap, something that has been long awaited. The first major update is set to add a co-op mode, though we don’t have any details on when yet.
