Published:

Surprise! Nintendo just revealed a modern app, and it’s all about music from its games.

Appropriately titled Nintendo musicthe modern app will allow you to stream songs from Nintendo’s nearly 40-year history and will be available on astute devices today. Actually, it already is available on iOS and Android. You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to start using it, but it’s available to those who do so at no extra cost.

The launch trailer gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect, including an interface that should look familiar to anyone who uses Spotify or Apple Music. Franchises whose music is included in the app include Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon and more.

Some of the features outlined in Nintendo’s launch trailer and press release:

  • Songs can be streamed online or downloaded for offline listening
  • In addition to selected playlists, songs will be organized by game
  • Users will be able to create their own playlists
  • Recommendations based on Nintendo Switch gaming history
  • An “anti-spoiler” filter that allows you to hide songs from certain games
  • Possibility to extend some songs by 15, 30 or 60 minutes

Nintendo says more music will be added over time. There is currently no (legal) way to stream all of Nintendo’s classic songs in one place, so this is quite a surprise for fans. Personally I will be perform duties on the Animal Crossing soundtrack and Wii Store Channel Theme.
