New GTA Online update breaks Steam Deck support

Published:

Today, Grand Theft Auto Online received an update, and the PC port of the crime simulator finally received anti-cheating software. However, not everyone is elated, as the update made it impossible to play GTA Online on Steam Deck.

It may be demanding to believe, but GTA Online he is 11 years elderly nowThe game was released simultaneously Grand Theft Auto V back to Xbox 360 and PS3. Later in 2015, the game came to PC and was ported to Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. And while it was incredibly popular, the PC version remained unreleased for almost a decade GTA Online lacked a proper anti-cheat system to prevent players from easily using the mod menu and other tools to cause chaos and gain unfair advantages. But that changed on Tuesday, which is nice, unless did you enjoy playing GTA Online on Valve’s portable computer.

September 17th Rockstar has released a fresh update for GTA Online on all platforms. As part of the PC version update, GTA Online now includes BattlEye, a proprietary anti-cheat software used in many other games. Most PC gamers were elated with that. GTA Online Over the years it has gained a reputation for being full of scammers, Modders and annoying trolls. The hope is that Eye of Battle I’ll keep some of it and make the game GTA Online in 2024 a better experience on PC.

However, included in the fresh BattlEye FAQ GTA OnlineRockstar confirms it will no longer be playable GTA Online on the steam deckPlayers will still be able to enjoy GTA Vstory mode on Deck, but online play is not supported.

And to be clear, it’s not entirely BattlEye’s fault, which is in many games, some of which run on Steam Deck with Linux. Rockstar could theoretically update GTA Online to support BattlEye on Steam Deck in a future patch, but the next part of the FAQ seems to suggest that may not happen. Here’s what Rockstar says about GTA V on Steam Deck:

Note: GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck. Any support questions should be directed to Valve’s Steam Deck Support and Community.

It seems like Rockstar is washing their hands of the situation and moving on. Maybe I’m wrong, but I wouldn’t hold my breath that GTA Online will never be able to play on Steam Deck again.

In other “Rockstar Update” news, the publisher’s PC launcher update contained some folders related to GTA6 AND Red Dead Redemption.

The files were quickly deleted, and as far as I can tell, there was nothing thrilling in there. But it’s just more evidence that Rockstar is apparently working on a PC port Red Dead Redemption. This open-world Western has been trapped on consoles since it released in 2010. Over the past year or so, evidence seems to be mounting that maybe, just maybe, RDR will finally get the PC version it deserves.
