New data shows everyone is currently playing shooting games – while Pokémon Legends: ZA underperforms compared to Arceus

At least according to recent data Newzoo shared with IGN, everyone is playing shooters these days.

Newzoo, whose revenue estimates include digital purchases of full games including, but not circumscribed to, DLC, subscriptions and microtransactions, revealed the top 20 PC and console games for October, both in terms of revenue and MAU (monthly vigorous users), combined in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Man, there are a lot of shooters on this list! Battlefield 6 is at the top of the revenue charts in its debut month and in third place in terms of monthly vigorous users. While Battlefield’s dominance has already been well documented, it’s still an impressive feat considering Battlefield was only available for a week in October.

It is worth noting that although the Call of Duty game set took 9th place on the revenue list, in terms of MAU it was in second place, ahead of Battlefield. Once again, however, Battlefield only had a week compared to the full month of Call of Duty, so the real test will be November’s data when Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 takes on Battlefield. MAUs are a slightly better benchmark for Call of Duty given its presence on Xbox Game Pass.

Shooter Arc Raiders debuted at No. 7 in revenue and No. 18 in MAU, somewhat hampered by the fact that it was only available for two days in October, so we should see a clearer picture of its success in November as well.

These recent games are joined by many of the usual suspects: Counter-Strike 2 at No. 8 in revenue and No. 9 in MAU, Fortnite at No. 3 in revenue and No. 1 in MAU, and just on the MAU chart: GTA 5 at No. 7, Helldivers 2 at No. 16, Borderlands 4 at No. 17, Apex Legends at No. 19, and Overwatch at No. 19. 20. They are just shooters; Roblox, Minecraft, Valorant, League of Legends and annual sports titles remain robust. Breaking the dominance of a handful of live service giants that consume so much of viewers’ time, attention and money is challenging recent games like never before.

There was a edged showdown in the RPG monsters this month, with Pokémon Legends: ZA ranking 5th in revenue and 15th in MAU, and Digimon Story Time Stranger in 13th place in revenue. There was never any doubt that Pokémon would win this battle, but Newzoo noted that ZA “underperformed compared to Legends: Arceus,” which could suggest some hesitation in switching to a real-time action-based battle system, or perhaps caution after the release of Scarlet and Violet State. It’s worth noting that Pokémon Legends: ZA was released as a cross-generational title on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo’s official sales figures show that Pokémon Legends: ZA sold almost 6 million copies in its opening week. Pokémon Legends: ZA, which debuted on October 16, has sold 5.8 million copies worldwide, about half of which were purchased for Switch 2. This means that the first Pokémon game to feature real-time Pokémon battles is the fifth best-selling game in the series in terms of first-week sales. For reference, that’s more than Pokémon X/Y and Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee managed in their first weeks, but not as much as Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and Pokémon Sword/Shield.

IGN’s Pokémon Legends: ZA review returned 8/10. We said: “Pokémon Legends: ZA finally feels like Game Freak is getting back on track in the 3D era of Pokémon, with interesting scenery to explore, a well-written story, and a complete overhaul of the fighting system that works surprisingly well.”
