In an act of holiday generosity (and sneaky marketing), Netflix is giving everyone a up-to-date way to compete with their friends. The streamer will release its mobile game on December 17 The Squid Game: Unleashed so everyone can play for free, whether they have a Netflix subscription or not.
On Game rewardsNetflix has announced that the game based on the deadly competition from the popular drama series will not be available behind a paywall for a restricted time. The Squid Game: Unleashed is a multiplayer Battle Royale game featuring challenges drawn from both the acclaimed series and “new games inspired by classic childhood activities,” according to game page. The site also states that “each round is a dark trip back in time”, so I’m guessing events like the musical chairs variant where the last person standing is shot, or the freeze marker where the person is literally frozen, and her limbs breaking off are not out of the question.
Players can make initial registration now and get an exclusive skin to apply while competing for the ultimate prize. There seem to be a few differences between the game and the series. Images of the game released by Netflix show that players can wield objects such as bats and balls. It also appears that the infamous Glass Bridge challenge now allows players to run across the bridge all at the same time, rather than individually as in the series. Besides, it doesn’t look like getting past the huge piggy bank hanging on a chain at the end of the bridge will be simple.
Alain Tascan, president of games at Netflix, talked about what players can expect from the game Game rewards. “The Squid Game: Unleashed is all about playing iconic games in the series like Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light with your friends (or against them), so we invite everyone to join in the chaos this holiday season.
Second season Squid Game Premiere on December 26. You can catch up on the show by bingeing the first season and then continue by trying to beat the game yourself. Just don’t piss your family off with yours Squid Game supremacy.
