Netflix creates various movies and TV series based on Catan, the world-famous multiplayer board game.
In Catan, players take on the role of settlers who try to build and develop estates, trade and acquire resources. Its slogan is: “Trade. Build. Settle.”
According to DiversityNetflix has secured global rights to Catan and plans to release various projects, both live-action and animated. There is talk of film, television with and without a script. All projects will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee (which recently split from Embracer), Pete Fenlon of Catan Studios, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, sons of Catan inventor Klaus Teuber.
Teuber first published Settlers of Catan in Germany in 1995. It became one of the greatest board games of all time, selling over 40 million copies. He died at the age of 70 in 2023.
Benjamin and Guido Teuber, co-founders of Catan GmbH, commented: “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan 30 years ago, he imagined an ambitious world where people would come together to trade, build and settle together – both at the table and beyond. The partnership with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in this travel. For thirty years, Catan has connected families and friends around the world. Now we’re thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage – staying true to our father’s vision of creativity, strategy and human connection.”
There is no release window for any Catan projects and no details on what those projects will be. However, it is clear that Netflix, after a series of successes, sees great value in projects based on board games and video games. Indeed, Netflix struck a Monopoly rights deal with Hasbro Entertainment earlier this year.
