Five years ago, ustwo games announced that it was working on a third installment in the critically acclaimed Monument Valley puzzle game series. Now, after all the anticipation, the game will finally be released on December 10, 2024, and will be available exclusively on Netflix Games on launch day.
In the Opening Night Live trailer today, we got our first look at Monument Valley 3. It’s both familiar and up-to-date, with a up-to-date little hero named Noor carrying a lantern. According to the press release, Noor seeks out a up-to-date source of power “before the light of the world is extinguished forever.” As before, players exploit the touchscreen to navigate the MC Escher-like environments and create paths for the character to traverse.
Monument Valley 3 appears to utilize similar spatial and visual puzzle styles to its predecessors, but it appears that the lantern-carrying protagonist will occasionally need to successfully guide other characters through the mazes. The first game featured a single protagonist, while the second featured a mother and her child navigating mazes together and exploring themes related to their relationship. Both games were critically acclaimed for their design, with Monument Valley 2 winning the Game Award for Best Mobile Game of 2017 and winning Best Puzzle Game at the 2018 Webby Awards.
Monument Valley 3 will technically be available on both iOS and Android, like previous versions, but it will only be available through the Netflix Games app at launch. Additionally, Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 will launch on Netflix Games on September 19 and October 29, respectively. Netflix, as we’ve previously reported, has struggled to gain a significant number of subscribers and is reportedly internally discussing whether to add in-app purchases or ads to its gaming platform in the future.
