Monster Hunter creator says there’s not much room for a dinosaur crisis after success

Dino Crisis creator Shinji Mikami says there isn’t “a lot of room” for the series after the massive success of the Monster Hunter series. Despite the rather stark differences between the two, Mikami feels that “the awesomeness of dinosaurs and the things you can do with them” has been “really nailed” by Monster Hunter in the recent past, so he’s “really surprised” that Dino Crisis fans want more.

His comments come from Eurogamer interview at Gamescom, where he said that even if he decided to make a remake or a fresh installment, he “really doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of room for those types of games right now, just because Monster Hunter has become such a popular game.”

When comparing the two IPs, the only thing they really have in common is their utilize of dinosaurs. Dino Crisis is more of a survival horror, while Monster Hunter is more of a happy teaming up with friends to go on hunts together. Overall, the game has a very different tone, which makes Mikami’s comments quite surprising.

In a poll conducted by Capcom earlier this year, Dino Crisis was named the game that fans of the series would most like to see return. It easily beat out Mega Man and Devil May Cry, with 20,000 more votes than both games. What do you think of Mikami’s comments? Do you understand what he meant, or do you think there are enough differences between the two for them to coexist? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
