We don’t know much about next Mass Effect game yet, except it’s happening and Liara T’Soni will be in it. This has left fans of the series impatiently waiting for any bits of information they can get their hands on, and BioWare’s Michael Gamble, who is leading the development of Mass Effect 4, may have just given them something to think about.
“There are so many new Mass Effect fans in my mentions,” Gamble recently wrote on X (via Rant game). “Maybe because it’s like 5 bucks or something. It’s great to watch. There is additional DLC worth playing, but be sure to play Lair of the Shadow Broker. Thanks”.
First of all, Mass Effect Legendary Edition actually exists on sale for less than a fiver on the Steam Fall Sale, which is an absolutely insane price for literally hundreds of hours of unique sci-fi RPG action. It’s a great game (the original ending was okay) and is more than worth your time if you haven’t played it yet – trust me, you won’t get more of your five bucks than you do here.
What’s more interesting, however, is Gamble’s seeming insistence that if you’re new to this whole Mass Effect thing, you should really play the Shadow Broker DLC. For those who don’t know, The Shadow Broker’s lair is an expansion to Mass Effect 2 in which Liara fights a secret – you could say shadowy— an expert who first appeared as a plot device rather than a character in the original Mass Effect. I didn’t care much for the DLC: it was fine, but it mainly served as a way to get Liara back into the action (she’s not a playable character in Mass Effect 2), and since I didn’t particularly care for Liara, I found the expansion largely forgettable .
(For the record, I have nothing against Liara, I just preferred playing with Zaeed and the krogan. As Teddy Roosevelt said, be a role model, but always bring some heavy hitters along for the ride.)
Liara’s involvement in Mass Effect 4 proved successful confirmed already, but Gamble’s message could be interpreted as a hint at the game’s broader underpinnings, especially since Liara returned as a playable party in Mass Effect 3. If it was simply about being aware of the characters, this (along with ME1) would be sufficient. The specificity of “be sure to play Lair of the Shadow Broker” suggests to me that there may be more to it than that.
And now it’s time to ditch these kinds of hidden clues. Dragon Age: Veilguard is already out and doing quite well No DLC is planned for this gamethe focus was on Mass Effect. In the past, Gamble has often dropped hints: for example, in 2023 teased N7 Day “packages”. in a compact online game that ultimately led to the release of a fresh Mass Effect promotional image.
