More than any other continuation from Don’t Hin or another studio, Lost Records: Bloom and Rage are like a spiritual successor to life, they are strange. This is supernatural, rebellion about the camera. It’s about girls and narrative choices that shape their relationships. It is about how these relationships, in turn, shape each other.
Velvet Cove Lost Records is not quite an iconic Arcadia Bay location. Surprised in a diminutive town on the upper Peninsula, Michigan (on the smaller, northernmost, Keeneaw Peninsula of the Keeneaw) is basically anywhere. And so this part of the world feels, for sure, but Velvet Cove must exist in this state anywhere and now to emphasize the relationship of the game over time.
At the end of the first part of the game (part 2 was released on April 15), there is no journey in time in Lost Records. There is also no telepathy; Only some magic, because now it is still largely undefined. On the contrary, the past is a constructed narrative of women on today’s 2022, remembering the 16th summer in 95. The one before graduation. Before Swann left. Before they promised that they would never talk about it. Before…

Swann, an outcast, who prefers unnoticed at the moment, takes the camera on the trail and records animals. Ruins. She returns home and films her cat around the bedroom. The game connects the tape, allows me to edit the material. I make a movie, a moving diary that looks like a granular spool, which swirled in Swann’s hands a few seconds at once. And when I watch it all back through the grain, it seems to me that I keep this tape in my own hands, not something rendered on my computer. One day she was noticed, she made friends with three girls, who also do not match for reasons that they never really understood.
There are moments when the time jumps 27 years between the belt and the Velvet Cove in one stage, others when the days play with the comments echo from above. Thanks to this ongoing conversation, elections are made. Swann remembers who it was, she rang on the phone 27 years ago, what everyone called the hideout that you found and decorated at the lake. And if these nostalgic memories of such an idealized moment are wrong, well, there are these swann tapes, those you record all the time. Normal?
Lost Records is nostalgic, but also applies to nostalgia and the blurred, lossy creation of the memory of a strange childhood – at least halfway in her narrative. The past is certainly romanticized, but it seems amazing. The featherlight is too nice, the adventures are too trail. They even say the same, referring to Blair Witch as Swann Borly Films during Lost in the Woods one night. But maybe now I want criticism of nostalgia from the 90s ..

She does all these tapes of his cats and her toys, because she is alone, and when she has friends, she makes films because she never found these mirrors in her girlfriend at the film palace.
But then Keenewen’s unit. Velvet Cove. His Cool This is a game of about 40 -year -old women talking about drinks, just as it is a game about teenage indicators discovering Riot Grrrl and each other. But Velvet Cove is a film rental store with an ice stand, a ruined playground under a visible high journey, a garage of Nora, a trail through a forest near the lake, bedroom and this bar in which we sit today, remembering everything. All connected by roads and forests that you never see, only the water tower on the horizon.

Perhaps this is also a consequence of memory, these isolated moments and space, but I do not completely buy that we are still in some final version of the past. There are no other children. Almost no mention of school. I can’t find out my life why they would show a parking lot without other children of their age. Where are all Swann tapes and we are constantly recording?
Maybe that’s what was lost with memory. Maybe Part 2 will answer questions that I don’t have yet. What Lost Records: Bloom and Rage are configured deeply convincing, though defective.
