It’s always heartbreaking to see great games sell too poorly for the impoverished goblins to shell out for a sequel, but it really hurt me to learn that the amazing Dead Space remake didn’t. catch yourself enough for EA to greenlight a Dead Space 2 remake (even if EA was a little vague on the details). Doubly so in the face of The Callisto Protocol – a game that I think is still worth purchasing at a significant discount if you like punching nasty things with a lot of metal in them. It’s pretty stimulating to learn that the next game from Lies Of P creator Round 8 Studios might just replace that severed limb. In addition to the Puppety Soulslike sequel, they are also working on a sci-fi survival horror game, via Eurogamer.
The original report comes from a Korean news site EBNwho also claim that the game will operate Unreal Engine 5, although a statement from publisher Neowiz indicates that it is too early to reveal progress.
Personally, I really liked Lies Of P, even though I have a certain aversion to soulslike games in general – which always seem to focus on the mechanical details of FromSoft games, without paying much attention to all the quirks, narrative flourishes and sense of coherence of the world that really makes these games what they are. Still, I really liked the level design, which leaned heavily on Miyazaki’s trick of having guys try to push you away from things. Basically sadistic DM style trolling – one of the main elements that I feel is missing from many other soulslikes.
But I have a question for you, reader, am I being a bit of a hypocrite for having the impression that this will be a much more original romance than Lies Of P? I shouldn’t, really. Survival horror is, at its core, a genre as restrictive and formulaic as you like. Perhaps it’s a matter of proliferation: even if Round 8’s recent title is actually just Dead Space, I still think it’ll be a lot more refreshing than another Soulslike game, even if it sticks closely to an already established formula. Maybe I just like to call things I like “original.” Maybe I’m a gigantic, fat liar and need to stay in the trash for a while. Who knows!
Lies of P has not been forgotten – it will get a sequel along with several DLCs. As the budget report shows, this is the last we have heard about this. It was supposed to take place by the end of this year. “The closest we’ll probably get to Bloodborne is PC” – that’s what our Edders said about Lies Of P. This guy is 90% soul-like at this point, so I’m inclined to trust him. “An instant must-play for Soulslikers,” he wrote, “with fantastic flexibility in combat and old-fashioned stiffness in challenge.”
