Labyrinth of the Demon King is a cruel, unhappy worm worm embedded in a falling feudal Japan. I am a soldier with a low foot, or Ashigar, trying to avenge the murder of my master and his army at the hands of the king demon. As you can imagine, the chances are hopeless against me. My katana is broken, I get tired easily, and the maze that I am forced to navigate is the most depressing and misleading entanglement of narrow rooms and rooms without rainfall that I have visited since the time of PS1. Not to mention the fact that the king of demons you openly mock your secret puzzles and repulsive Yokai.

This nasty 15-hour adventure belongs to the fresh generation of dungeons fraglers, heavily indebted to King’s Field, the Dark Fantasy Fromsofware series, which preceded Dark Souls. The maze of the king demon follows in the footsteps Lunacidwhich has popularized the revival, and now there are plenty of similar games on my steam wishes list Keep the ghul AND Monomith. Lunacid’s maze is often traded in Lurid Vhs Fantasy for the oppressive committing of Buddhist folklore and survival of horror dirt, at the same time developing-and the gradual fights of the fight, which can usually be expected in games of this ilk.

About this fight: I was ready to give up the maze of the king demon after a two -hour sign. The game forces combat tutorial straight from the gate, but I still gave me my ass. My ashigar is a skeleton of a turtle with a rod, which is exhausted at the alarming clip with every tagging, poorly transient swing of my katana. Avoiding someday does not exhaust my bunch of a hard-wearing rod, but if I avoid four -second renewal again, this is happening, and the punishment is huge. If I happen to get through any of the squeaks, crazy characters whose attacks I can evaporate in minuscule A window, I lose peace and death is sure.

But then I learn to dig. There is a kick button and I neglected to exploit it for a long time. Kicking the enemy takes on them long enough to get a push without risk, and pulls the advantage mostly tense fights. I finally found out that the fight really tested my ability be composed During terrifying meetings. When this was connected-and when I started to understand some other play-offs of the game, such as a bonfire reminiscent system and the importance of escape-it has mocked a lot of time before I turned around. Not only did I not intend to drop the maze anymore, but I was obsessed with them.

It is surprisingly effortless. The demon’s maze is divided into four main areas, and in addition to refreshing external sections, everything looks the same. Each surface is covered with an indefinite brown-gray bar. Doors and sometimes whole corridors can be blocked by mysterious respiratory piles. Many doors are of course blocked or closed. It is an oppressive gloomy and monotonous world in which you can spend a lot of time, and yet illogically twisting rooms and ruined rooms, I manage to leave the impression so much that at the end I felt that I knew the map quite well.

Meanwhile, the enemies themselves – and even NPC – have become inscrutable by the resulting 3D style. For example, it took me some time to realize a sales cat. When it comes to demons, massive pixels renounce details and subtleties in favor of generalized cuts: I think I cut (or run away) from the mass of terrifying feeling polyps, and this is somehow terrifying than if it was a careful multi -sipped sentence about the subject He is gone.

It is probably worth thinking about this stylistic decision. At least half a dozen horror game seems every week on Steam, which plunder the staggers of 3D graphics from the mid -90s. It became low for a certain disordered horror, whose more state-of-the-art presentations cannot count. But in the case of the maze of graphics, it is actually more chilly and more degraded than materials from the 90s, which channels. This makes enemies more terrifying and not more guessed, yes, but it also gives a game in homes of absolute resembling Video nasties. In general, it seems that no one in the 1990s would dare to launch the market: he has something forbidden.

But as terrifying as beasts and corridors, I felt much less threatened until the middle of the match. There are several different weapons, everything that can be improved, from my starting katana to Otsuchi (“very heavy hammer”), the great Dao (“Massive Sword”) and Wystinatas, axes, spear-even a rifle, all with different attack speeds and current compromises. There are also talismans, which I mostly forgot to exploit, but which have both offensive and defensive functions. The difficulty narrows halfway, mainly thanks to the knowledge of the combat system, but improving my health and endurance certainly helped (Trust me: prioritize the latter), as well as understanding of the patterns of the traveling traffic of Nuribotoke, a character persecuiting persecuted after Resident Evil Mr. X.

There are not many puzzles, but they all have impoverished sense, usually requiring many rebirth on the map. One of my colleagues tends to fight those that I found to be effortless, and vice versa, but they all have solutions that every player perceived halfway will not solve any problems. Many tips are hidden in the scrolls found in the world, and reading them can be as discomfort as roaming the Halls: beware of disturbingly detailed descriptions of Buddhist eight hell.

The maze of the demon’s king is mainly the work of one person, Jr Hudepohl and definitely seems to be the result of productive obsession. I don’t know if the band could do something so quietly without someone who led: ask: How will people manage? I will not lie: when I watched the loans of the demon’s king are pending, I felt an unconnected sense of relief that I would never have to wander again in these rooms, with their drones of mysterious origin and the breath of their gross inhabitants. But I’m sure I did at least once: it’s the strongest strange horror that we’ll probably see in 2025.
