Konami says Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater exists in part because younger gamers are no longer familiar with the series

Konami has revealed that one of the reasons it greenlit a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is because younger gamers are no longer familiar with the series.

Talk to Play and share via GamesRadarseries producer Noriaki Okamura admitted that Konami wants to attract a recent audience with a remake that will appear 20 years after the original Metal Gear Solid 3 and nine years after the last main installment.

“One of the things that really inspired us to do the remake was that we realized that a lot of the newer, younger generations of gamers weren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore,” he said.

“Fundamentally, our mission and responsibility was to make sure the show lived on for future generations. After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say – but then again, who is Solid Snake?”

In fact, this is one of the reasons why Konami chose to name the remake Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, instead of simply calling it Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In terms of timeline, Snake Eater is the first game in the series, so the employ of the Greek letter “delta” helped create a recent beginning.

The series began in 1987 with Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear, and its last major installment was Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, released in 2015. The spin-off Metal Gear Survive was released in 2018. and only collections of older games were released in subsequent years.

So it’s straightforward to see where Konami is coming from. Metal Gear is well-known to fans of a certain age and has huge nostalgia potential, but without a brand recent installment of the main game in almost a decade, younger gamers’ interest probably wouldn’t be where Konami would like it to be.

The question now is, where will Konami take the next series after the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater? We know MGS: Master Collection Vol. 2 is on the way, but could Konami create a remake of Kojima’s groundbreaking Metal Gear Solid in the future? Could fans finally get a brand recent Metal Gear Solid game after this? If so, will Konami continue the story Kojima planned or will it start over?

As for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami has not announced a release date yet, but it is expected to be released

PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC at some point in 2025.
