I’ll level with you: I’ve never sat down and considered exactly how many ways my head could be ground, distorted, and mutilated, which is probably why no one calls me to come work. Deadly Floor 3.
You see, creators love brutality. You can tell because up-to-date documentary version from PCG (that’s us!) and Tripwire – in addition to talking about influences, approach and philosophy – describes in detail the evolution of KF3 in terms of the Massive Evisceration And Trauma technology developed by the studio.
This is MEAT technology for compact, because of course it is, and it was first introduced in Killing Floor 2. It’s a system that allows zombies to do all sorts of nasty things: constant blood splatter, limb removal, that sort of thing, and in the KF3 version it looks even more ridiculously.
“We’ve really doubled the number of wounds on zeds,” says Tripwire founder Dave Hensley. “We really wanted a dynamic blood system. We want to be able to dismember any limb in any order, we want to apply wounds to it and different types of damage to different wounds, all of which will be visible on Zed at the same time.”
Which, yes, the phrase “bloom head” will be with me at every meal from this day to the last, but just in case you’re not convinced, you can take a look at the sequence of Zed’s skulls exploding while Wynia marvels at them. They look like unique and exotic orchids: impressive and terrifying in equal measure. I think… I think I want to see more? Oh no.
