Embark Studios has just launched a season of 8 free finals, introducing recent, renewed destruction and improvements of a competitive game. But he also added a standard competitive multiplayer function, which – at least during the premiere – will not be available on Xbox Series S.
Season 8 introduces the functions of quality of life to “improve the player’s experience and help to strengthen their competitive skills”, including the beta version of immediate replay – that is Kill Cam.
Here is the official blurb:
The main add -on aimed at increasing competitive clarity and supporting the development of skills. Players can now recreate the intense moments of the game directly related to the opponent’s point of view, facilitating the identification of the exact source of elimination. The immediate replay was a significant, but satisfying development challenge and is currently in a beta version with constant improvements.
It is noteworthy that studio statements added to the announcement: “This function will not be compatible with Xbox Series S, PlayStation 4 and some computer compilations during the premiere.”
Killcam is at this point a fairly standard FPS function, for example, it has been part of Call of Duty for years. And it is usually available on all platforms where you play. Again, in the case of Call of Duty, Killcam exists on Xbox Series S, PS4 and all computers on which the game itself can work.
It is surprising that he is missing the finals on these platforms. Apparently there is a problem with the performance, which the programmer is still working on, and mentions that this is a problem “when starting”, so I hope that Killcam will soon be added to all platforms.
IN Blog postEmbark Studios explained the challenge he faces, adding an immediate repeat function, calling it “technology”.
To be truthful, at the first and second look it was an impossible task. But we take the challenge seriously in the embark. The prototypes of this function come from the first days of the project, before the finals even had a name, trying to prove it. What you see in season 8 is the result of all this demanding work. We had to calculate everything that matters: player movement, environmental destruction, object -oriented interactions at the level of loyalty of data, which is arduous to do in the dynamism shooter. Then take all this information and quickly reconstruct the moment.
By default, this is not enabled for everyone (especially in systems below 16 GB of RAM), but you can switch it manually. If you have power, turn it on, try it and tell us what you think. We will collect feedback, polishing efficiency and extending integration throughout the season.
The omission of the immediate replay with the Xbox Series S is engaging for another reason. Usually, Microsoft insists on the even functions when it comes to games operating on Xbox Series X and S. Yes, there are differences in performance, because games will inevitably work worse on less powerful S, but we are used to the parity function, and Killcam would certainly be in the category of functions as opposed to performance.
Xbox Series S caused that programmers a lot of headaches since sales in 2020 have made sporadic exceptions when it comes to function parity. For example, Larian was able to run the Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series X and S with a divided screen only on X, so that RPG hit can get to the Microsoft console just a few months after PC and PS5.
The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, pointed out that the parity clause remains in place, but it will be engaging to see what the company is doing to the next generation.
Meanwhile, the season of the 8 finals adds two recent weapons, mouse and keyboard support for console players, detailed summaries of matches, fresh battles, update to anti-cheat and many others.
