Do I like city builders like Cities: Skylines and SimCity 4, or do I just like road builders? In both games, I spend most of my time improving the network of roads and intersections that make up the veins of my cities, as well as trying to solve traffic jams using public transport and mods that extend the simulation.
Meet Junxions, a traffic engineering game that focuses entirely on the simulation and construction of roads, railways and pedestrian sidewalks, right down to coding traffic lights. The premiere is planned for 2025, and you can find the trailer below.
Junxions’ main game mode takes you through a series of hand-crafted maps where you must apply the tools at your disposal to solve traffic problems while bypassing the constraints of pre-existing structures. You’ll need to take into account traffic regulations, as well as complications (and benefits) such as bus lanes, cycle paths, tram tracks and all kinds of pedestrian crossings.
There’s also a sandbox mode for free experimentation and, perhaps most interestingly, the ability to input real-world coordinates and generate a map based on your real-world location. If you want to generate a map based on your hometown and fix that ever-clogged intersection on your way to work, you can do so.
The Steam page it also claims that the game has “full modding support”, including map sharing, traffic solutions, and importing custom models.
I’m really delighted that something like this exists. People forget that Colossal Order, before it made Cities: Skylines, was dabbling in a similarly focused traffic sim, Cities In Motion. I too come from the UK, which is obsessed with roundabouts. We are afraid they can ensnare us foreverand we celebrate it as the UK Rondo of the Year award was named today. I can’t wait to find out if Junxions is a game to die for or celebrate when it releases in 2025.
