James Gunn’s DCU reboot won’t begin until Superman arrives in 2025, but said the film is already being shot to give the teams involved as much time as possible to fine-tune its final look, especially the quality of the visual effects. The director’s comments were in response to growing concerns about terrible special effects in feature films, as CGI artists be brought to a critical point.
“That’s why we ended Superman year before the premiere and why they worked hard on many shots for months before that,” Gunn wrote on Threads on Aug. 18. “That’s why we start editing hard while we’re shooting. That’s why I prepare so aggressively and why we only shoot finished scripts. And Supergirlthat I don’t direct is handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists enough who help us create the magic.”
This Guardians of the Galaxy AND Suicide Squad The writer and director was tapped by Warner Bros. in 2022 to rebuild its big-screen DC universe, and Superman: Legacywhich is set to be released on July 11, 2025, is the first project in the endeavor. The first image released from the film, which was “shot on set by Jess Miglio and was shot entirely in camera,” showed the titular character donning the suit in an apartment while a giant purple laser shot out in the background. raised all kinds of questions among some fans about the look and artistic direction of the film, and leaked photos from July he continued to sow skepticism.
The recent craze for big-budget blockbusters and recent content from streaming platforms has led to an overreliance on green screens and post-production effects, which in addition to stretching VFX houses too gauntalso look awful. There was no better proof of that than last year’s Flashthe last breath of the pre-Gunn DCU, which sometimes looked comically badand some fans praised the effects for making them look like they were ripped from a mid-budget video game.
“If you dig a little, you’ll see that my films have always had a different approach, and I’ve always given my VFX associates the time to do their job properly and give them the respect they deserve,” Gunn wrote over the weekend. “And the VFX quality on those films is consistently great because of that (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and others are incredibly talented).”
