It’s in the game: Madden NFL will soon give EA’s American football series a documentary spin, and we hope it will take an in-depth look at Greg Jennings’ touchdown run

If you want to learn more about what took EA’s Madden franchise to where it is with this year’s confusingly named Madden NFL 25, I have good news for you. It’s in the game: Madden NFL, a documentary about the series, will arrive on Amazon Prime Video later this month.

Yes, forget about playing virtual American football as we enter the real NFL season, which is either very nice, just that, or the most depressing thing you’ve ever been through – depending on whether your team is 7-2 , 5-4, or 2-7 – it’s time to watch something about virtual football.

The four-part documentary hits the streaming service on November 26, and a frigid trailer has just been released that gives you a taste of what you can expect. Basically, a lot of ’90s people seem to be thinking “what, a video game about something that millions of people like, how could that possibly be a good idea?”, and John Madden shows up to save the day with his charm and values names, then gradually loading towards today’s entries.

“One of the greatest video games of all time, a groundbreaking franchise that became a global phenomenon that spanned generations but almost never happened,” the blurb reads: “Now, 36 years after the first game’s release, EA Sports gives viewers unprecedented access to the game developers who changed the game and our culture.

I’ll be truthful, I just hope we talk a little about things like how unstoppable Michael Vick was in Madden 2004, and maybe a few mentions of probably the most infamous Madden game of all time, Greg Jennings puts the team on his back to somehow get a TD with a broken leg.

Come on, EA, tell us how a really good Packers receiver managed to defy the laws of the universe and sneak past Darren Sharper, one of the most effective safeties in the league. Was this a mistake, can all Madden players still do this in secret if the mood strikes them, or does fate only let it go when it knows you’ll immediately record yourself saying something comical through replay before posting it on YouTube for prosperity? Or was Madden 2010 Greg Jennings just a tank?

Anyway, it’s something, and if you want more Madden, you can read my review of this year’s entry, Madden NFL 25.
