It takes two crosses to reach 20 million copies sold, and the creator announces another project

Published:

Hazelight Studio announced that its excellent co-op adventure game and IGN 2021 Game of the Year nominee, It Takes Two, has sold over 20 million copies.

This milestone comes three and a half years after the couch co-op game launched on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and is scheduled to launch on Switch in November 2022. It Takes Two sold over a million copies in the month after launch, and has since over time the numbers kept increasing. At last count in March this year, sales had reached 16 million, a testament to the positive word of mouth and effusive critical praise that the game continues to perform well even years after its release. It also helps that the game has had multiple sales since its release, selling for just $9.99 (down from $39.99) on the PlayStation Store at the time of publication.

It Takes Two was showered with praise upon release, earning us a 9/10 for what we called “a spectacular co-op adventure that sets a path for great gameplay ideas and uses them for mind-blowing hopscotch gameplay. ” Since then, the metascore is 88 Metacritical and a user score of 8.9, and won Game of the Year, Best Family Game, and Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2021. It also took home the Golden Joystick for Best Multiplayer Game, the GDC Award for Best Design, Game of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement in game design at the DICE Awards and the BAFTA Awards for Multiplayer Game and Original Property. A film adaptation is currently in development at Amazon Studios, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson producing.

Meanwhile, developer Hazelight Studios, headed by Josef Fares, has been relatively quiet since the release of It Takes Two. The studio’s first game, A Way Out, was released about three years before It Takes Two, which raised hopes that we could expect another announcement from the dedicated cooperative gaming studio any day now.

Updated at 8:22 a.m. PT: Literally 20 minutes after writing the above paragraph, Fares tweeted to tease his next game.

“I’m getting a lot of questions about the next game,” Fares wrote. “Here’s the joke. This is a BRAND NEW IP address called S*** ******N. I can’t wait to show it off soon🔥”

The official Hazelight account then followed up on the matter with a picture some documents marked as “NEW IP” with the year of issue written. The documents show that the games, like A Way Out and It Takes Two, will be released under the EA Originals banner. It looks like an announcement is indeed imminent.

Updated at 8:29 p.m. PT: Two minutes after posting the above update, I checked my email and found a message from PR stating that Fares’ next game would be, or more accurately, “an all-new co-op adventure.” Maybe if I post this update and check my social media channels again, they’ll just reveal the whole thing.
