FromSoftware has announced that Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon has surpassed 3 million units sold, a fantastic milestone for the series that previously existed in an ocean of niche video game franchises. The game is less than a year senior when this adwhich is certainly not a bad result for a recent entry in an industry based on legacy IP.
When it comes to comparing this game to previous games in the series, these stats are complex to compare. VG Charts is the only website with numbers for most series, and its stats show that previous titles have never surpassed a million units sold. The closest was Armored Core 2 on PS2, which reportedly sold around 790,000 units during its lifetime. With that in mind, you can see how crazy Armored Core 6 sales are.

It is worth noting that in October 2023. Japanese voice actor for Rusty announced the game surpassed 2.8 million copies sold, so the momentum clearly slowed down in the months after release. But even so, these types of games with mighty single-player campaigns and lots of replayability proved to be steady sellers even years after release, so you can expect that number to slowly grow in the coming months. I wouldn’t expect it to exceed 4 million, believe me.
The question is, why did Armored Core 6 sell so well compared to its predecessors? There are some obvious factors, such as FromSoftware’s massive surge in popularity following the release of the Dark Souls and Elden Ring series. The popularity of those titles certainly increased, especially since Armored Core 6 inherited some of the features present in those games. However, it’s worth noting that, while niche, Armored Core is a respected series in the minds of the gaming community. Goodwill, fond memories, and a solid track record can go a long way these days.
