It annoys me that the only thing Zelda can drink in Echoes of Wisdom is cocktails

Before I write about cocktails and women, I need to make one thing clear: girls are not okay. By “girls” I mean myself and some of my other friends who don’t identify as men. When I heard this The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom finally put Zelda in the driver’s seat of her own game, I was obviously delighted. I’m a woman, and I enjoy playing games as a woman whenever possible – and this is my first chance to do so in my favorite franchise of all time.

But now that the game is available, I am All what’s on my mind is the representation of Zelda and the girl protagonist in general in the game. I have many thoughts about varying degrees of being unhinged. (This is a general note about me and what I think about it Echoes.) And one thing I can’t get over is the fact that the only way Zelda can consume food in this game is drinking a smoothie.

Smoothies – ice-cold, liquid food that has been shoved in women’s faces all their lives as well and carb-free, yet something that can be enjoyed with pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, I love cocktails and of course people of any gender can drink cocktails. But liquid diets They have long been the preferred method used by the health and fitness industry to convince women that they don’t actually need to eat that much. If you’re a mom too busy to prepare dinner, don’t ask your child’s other parent for assist – just make a smoothie! Don’t want to look bloated before an vital event? Smoothie! Are you ashamed to eat in public because you don’t want anyone to notice how you eat calories? SMOOTHIE!

And now that I am At last playing as my favorite video game character, perhaps ever, I have to replenish her health with non-nutritious steamed vegetables or sizzling pepper steak, but A refreshing mixed cocktail. To make matters worse, Zelda’s cocktails only have two ingredients! Where is the protein? At least give me the option to add Greek yogurt.

Am I thinking too much about gender in relation to this game? Probably. However, the fact that the first character in the series only drinks cocktails is like making a decision like “all the women were sick that day.”

I imagine a group of guys sitting at a desk asking each other what women eat. “Cocktails!” they say, and on the other side of the world I turn over in my sleep, knowing that something bad has just been done. (As a journalist, I must note that I have absolutely no evidence that men were at the helm of the smoothie decision or that this choice had anything to do with Zelda’s gender.)

But as a girl playing girl, I Really it’s a shame the creators didn’t let her shove some tacos down her gullet like we all do in real life. In fact, let her spray the salsa on her cheek and leave it there for the entire day. Let it come back for a few seconds. Let her snack between meals. Let it be full!
