Hello everyone, I’m Jenn, lead writer and voice producer on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Since the game was revealed in June, we’ve been blown away by its reception (and impressed by the eagle-eyed listeners who recognized the voices in the trailers). It’s our great pleasure to finally reveal our English voice cast and share more information about our characters and their world.
We’ve been living and breathing these characters for the last few years, so it was surreal and an honor to see our incredible voice cast bring them to life.
The actors were phenomenal to work with (and just great people). We had a great time during the recording sessions. The cast beautifully captured the complexity of the characters, each of whom was shaped by the harshness of their world. Each character has experienced deep and ongoing loss and dealt with it in their own way.
Previously, we introduced four characters.
Charlie Cox (Daredevil) is the voice of Gustave, the chief engineer of Expedition 33. Gustave grew up in Lumière in the shadow of the Malacca and dedicated his life to protecting the city. As his senior year ends, Gustave is determined to defeat the Malarka and reclaim a future for the Lumière children.
Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3) plays Maelle, a shy loner looking to escape Lumière’s constraints. Orphaned as a child, Maelle always felt like an outsider. Her only contact is with Gustave, her adoptive brother. She is the youngest member of the Expedition (she is 16) and sees this as her chance to finally discover the world beyond.
Kirsty Rider (Sandman) voices Luna, the Expedition’s lead researcher. Lune is very busy trying to defeat the Malarka and finish her parents’ work. He feels the weight of responsibility and the seriousness of the stakes involved.
Shala Nyx (The Old Guard) voices Sciel, a tranquil and cheerful warrior who is unfazed by the obstacles that lie ahead. Overcoming the past allowed her to accept adversity. They will do everything they can and it will either be enough or it won’t be enough.
In our latest trailer, we introduce two up-to-date characters.
Many of you will recognize the voice of our beloved Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), who plays Verso, a threatening stranger who follows the Expedition’s every move.
We asked Ben how he described Verso, and he replied, “lost, lonely, and dangerous,” and that he expects players to feel “every emotion possible” as they meet his character.
Andy Serkis (“The Lord of the Rings”, “Black Panther”) plays Renoir, a man determined to save his family. He knows that victory requires sacrifices and he is ready to pay the price.
We also have the wonderful Rich Keeble and Maxence Cazorla as two of our favorite characters. We’ll share more with them soon.
Creating the characters was a multi-step process that included compiling a detailed history of Lumière and each character’s family history, and considering how previous generations had responded to the Malarka. All of these factors played a role in who each character is and what they are trying to overcome.
In many ways, the writing process is the ultimate RPG. It’s an extended thought experiment where we place our characters and their stories in these specific situations and step into their shoes. What are they doing? How do they feel? How have their past experiences shaped them, and how does it influence their choices today?
The cast and characters aren’t the only up-to-date elements in this trailer. Attentive fans could spot up-to-date locations and up-to-date enemies. Golgra and Tisseur are two terrifying enemies that will test your reflexes in our reactive turn-based combat.
We’ve also highlighted more traversal elements in the game. The Pictos-powered grappler allows Expedition members to scale peaks and traverse cliffs, increasing the speed of their exploration of the world.
Creating the world, the story, and the characters was deeply satisfying (and fun and engaging and crazy). We’re proud and excited to bring the game to everyone when it releases in Spring 2025.
We hope you liked today’s discoveries! Stay tuned for more information about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. We’ve got plenty more to show you, including world, gameplay, other characters, and behind-the-scenes features.
