Interstellar’s 10th Anniversary Return Is Another Failure for IMAX

Published:

Interstellar returns to IMAX for the sci-fi film’s 10th anniversary on December 6. It’s usually a time of celebration for fans of the epic space epic and its director, Christopher Nolan. Finally a chance to once again see all 64 minutes of these stunning 70mm shots of black holes and planetary tsunamis on a huge screen. Unfortunately, it’s all about the how Interstellar The return to IMAX has fans disappointed and livid.

The mess started with tickets They were supposed to go on pre-sale on November 7 but there was almost no warning for fans to prepare. Then, instead of everyone going up at the same time, some viewers could get them earlier AMC App while Fandango only made it available a few hours after it was originally provided.

The confusing purchase process was compounded by the fact that only a handful of IMAX theaters would actually show Interstellar next month, and even then it will only last a week. Showtimes start on December 6 and last only until next Friday, December 13. Only eight theaters below, spread across six states, are showing:

Even if you live within walking distance of one of the theaters, almost all tickets are available have already sold out within 24 hours becoming available. It’s possible that more theaters will continue to be able to show films in the IMAX format in the coming weeks. Since the demand is so high, it will compete with other blockbusters such as Moana 2 (out November 27) and as more dates are added, Sonic 3 (released December 20). At least one theater, Autonation in Fort Lauderdale, announced it will be evident Interstellar in IMAX for a second week.

“There was no show nearby,” wrote one disappointed fan on the IMAX subreddit. “Even in Nashville, which surprised me. I’ve been waiting for this all year too. It has been my favorite film for ten years and I always regret not seeing it in IMAX when it was released.”

Even those who managed to get tickets are now traveling hundreds of miles to make it work. One person I booked the entire trip Orlando to Fort Lauderdale 200 miles, including accommodations. There are others drive for as long as eight hours to find your nearest IMAX screening. Is it practical? In words Interstallar hero, Cooper, “No. It’s necessary.

Let’s hope theaters see this as necessary Interstellar return to IMAX at a different date, in more places. For now, everyone else will have to keep up with regular shows later in December.
