Intel’s Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake processors will not have the instability issues that affected 13th and 14th generation processors

We’ve written extensively about the stability issues affecting 13th and 14th generation Intel processors. Both of our Jacobs have covered it in detail, Jacob Fox has explained the saga in detail, and Jacob Ridley has run a set of benchmarks comparing BIOSes before and after the fix, which fortunately showed no noticeable drop in performance.

The problem hasn’t gone away completely, though. Intel is investigating and has promised another update by the end of September. But there’s some good news. Intel says that “its next-generation processors, codenamed Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake, are not affected by the Vmin Shift instability issue.”

The above quote comes from blog post (By Tom’s Equipment) released a few days ago by Intel. It then assures owners of all 12th, 13th and 14th generation mobile processors, i3 and i5 (non-K), as well as all Xeon and Core Ultra Series 1 processors, that this issue does not occur.

While the news that Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake are free of Vmin stability issues is not surprising, it is certainly reassuring. A recurrence of this issue would be nothing low of catastrophic for Intel. I am sure they have been feverishly putting their next-gen chips through a series of stability tests.

In a blog post, Intel reiterates its request to all 13th and 14th generation owners to update their motherboard BIOS to default settings. Interestingly, it recommends this to all users, even those who don’t have the affected chips. Better protected than sorry, I suppose.

Intel has undoubtedly taken a hit to its reputation, but how much is impossible to estimate. It couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Intel’s impoverished corporate performance remains a cause for concern. But that’s the bigger picture.

Now that the stability issues have been identified and supposedly fixed, Intel will be hoping to put them behind them. When the dust settles, some questions remain. Did Intel have to sacrifice some next-gen performance to ensure stability? Was it refined at an architectural or platform level? Will it slam motherboard manufacturers for pushing turbo boost and power modes out of spec?

Hopefully we’ll find out soon. Both CPU families will launch in the coming weeks.
