Last week it was announced War mechanic is an upcoming simulator in which you take on the role of an enterprising fat ape who must build, defend and profit a military base in an alternate future where we are still fighting the massive one.

The game depicts a world where the Soviet Union attacks the United States during World War II, leading to a prolonged conflict. Our job is to gather resources, build a base and defend it from the Soviets, while we take on contracts to repair vehicles and achieve war goals for the good venerable Stars and Stripes.

Like some unholy love child of Satisfactory and Medal of Honor, Steam page describes harvesting resources using an “awesome blaster tool” that looks a bit like a combination of a giant wrench and a blowtorch. These resources turn into buildings for tank repairs, recent components for your combat vehicle, and some frigid anti-aircraft guns. Eventually you’ll be able to automate a lot of this stuff with an army of robots, the first of which looks like a cute Claptrap clone wearing period-appropriate goggles.

As much as I tell myself, I’m never going to cut down a tree or swing a pickaxe. Again. I always come back to this. This seems like a fresh take on a tried and true survival formula, although I wonder if I’ll miss it oh, very satisfying Ping M1 Garand (looks like we won’t be shooting in this case). With any luck, it will take me a long time to drive my custom-built WWII jeep/truck/tank/buggy around the mysterious island.

Apparently it also has a war campaign mode with a storyline featuring “intriguing characters” like Crazy Man and Wild Bully. While these names sound a bit like alpha placeholders, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt – the idea of my base-building survival game having a strategic aspect where I try to conquer other bases sounds sweet.

War Mechanic should appeal to tinkerers, explorers, (alternate history) World War II fans, and anyone who has come to the correct conclusion that Claptrap should shut his mouth and start repairing tanks for me. The premiere is planned for early 2025.
