I totally missed that the wizarding battle royale game Spellbreak was brought back to life

Published:

I started playing and enjoying the battle royale wizarding sim Spellbreak just before Spellbreak closed. Developers Proletariat, Inc. announced plans to bring back the servers in August 2022 in the midst of its acquisition by Activision Blizzard, putting an end to many cheerful hours spent skating down conjured icy ramps and throwing boulders like rabbits. Yes, I am the type of wizard who throws a rabbit if there are no boulders to spare.

Fortunately, it turned out that Proletariat resurrected their work and passed it on to posterity in the form of a free, standalone Community Version, available on Itch.io. You will need to start your own server or join another group if you want to play multiplayer, but it is a great gift nonetheless and I am cheerful to pass it on to you, the busy and productive Magenauts of Rockus Paperus Shottegonne.

This isn’t strictly “news”, I admit, because it’s nothing up-to-date. The Community Edition was released back in December 2022, a few months before I joined RPS as a full-time Scuttlebutt Conjurer. I just stumbled upon it care of former RPS Scuttlebutt magician Dominic Tarason. You could accuse me of being “bad at what I do”, but I would immediately respond that a magician is never behind schedule, nor is he early – he comes exactly when he feels like it, and if you don’t I’ll hit you right on the kisser with an electric tornado.

If you’ve never played Spellbreak, here’s a quick recap: The game has a typical battle royale premise, with a vast map with multiple biomes where people compete for power-ups and gear drops while racing to the center, but it spices things up with, well, magic. Like Magicka – Magicka! My favorite – you can combine elemental spells to create truly apocalyptic whizbangs. It’s also very speedy. These aren’t your typical eighty-year-old wizards in weighty, star-spangled robes. These are balmy newborn men who run around like ninjas.

If you have downloaded the Community version and are looking for opponents and tips, Disagreement with elementary fracture appears to be quite populated.
