Huntbound is an upcoming 2D cooperative RPG for all monster hunting fanatics

  • Sounds like the perfect game for Monster Hunter fans

The topic of ecology in fantasy worlds is convoluted. Is it really ethical to kill scarce beasts just because you want their loot? If that’s too complicated for you, here’s Huntbound, which will let you menace species with the best of them, aided only by your wits, friends, and perhaps a giant hammer.

I think the best way to describe Huntbound is to leave the ambiguity behind and say that if you’re looking for a featherlight 2D game reminiscent of Monster Hunter, this is for you. You’ll explore the world, fighting huge beasts and crafting bigger, better weapons to face more challenging battles. Sound familiar?

To be clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. But I think that’s the best way to describe what I see in Huntbound. And with some pretty decent-looking, if minimalistic, graphics and gameplay, it looks like it will please those of you who aren’t looking to jump into something like Monster Hunter Outlanders.

I have to hunt them all down

I should also add that while it obviously lacks some of the more intimate features of something like Monster Hunter, Huntbound has everything you really want. You have upgradeable gear, various boss monsters, and the ability to customize your hunter; not to mention playing with friends, which is always a plus!

Huntbound also makes me feel a slight but noticeable nostalgia for the good venerable days of Flash fighting games. So I’d say it’s worth a watch, especially if you like this genre; Huntbound will be available on Google Play on February 4!

If you’re curious about what else will happen in the already packed year 2025, why not take a look at the latest entry in our regular “Before the Game” feature, where we discuss things you can play right now?
