Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a leap forward for the game in many ways, while the main battle to defeat the occult beast and get back to mining will remain the same. Story-wise, time has jumped ahead, with the main location moving from the Bayou to a novel map in the Rocky Mountains called Mammon’s Gulch. This will emphasize verticality with multiple overlooks above the surface, inspired by the community’s love of DeSalle, and then mines and oil wells to explore below that connect the two mountainous regions. There are 16 complexes to explore in total, and the map as a whole is roughly equivalent in size to what came before.

There’s also a substantial tech leap, as CryEngine 5.11 powers the game, with Crytek looking to make the most of current-gen consoles. Console players will get native 4K and 60FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, which have been downgraded to 2K on Xbox Series S.

Other technical improvements include true-speed audio, a reworked UI, rebalanced perks, weapons, and Hunters, an option to center the reticle, reworked wire trap placement, and more.

Crytek discussed Hunt: Showdown 1896 last year before it was given a novel name. At the time I am hesitantly considering the possibility of continuingalthough it was promised that there would be no novel version of the game or a fee, just as Overwatch 2 was a replacement for the original.

The positive is that all purchases and player progress will be transferred to Hunt: Showdown 1896 from the original game, but the downside is that many of the senior Bayou maps are being shelved… for now. Crytek also said that they will “return post-launch after receiving their own remake.”
