How to Unlock Skill Mastery and the Mastery Cave in Stardew Valley

To unlock the Cave of Mastery, you must reach rank 10 in each skill. Once you do this, you will receive a message in the morning “You feel a new path is opening…” if you have reached the maximum and have not yet entered the cave.

The cave is located in Cindersap Forest, facing southeast:

Once everything is depleted, you will start accumulating Mastery Points instead of experience points. Think of it as exceeding your experience point limit. Each mastery point you earn by completing various tasks (fishing, fighting, harvesting, etc.) fills one mastery bar. Once the bar is full, you can go to the Mastery Cave to learn skill mastery. You can see how many you have in the skill menu.

Skill specializations cost more as more are unlocked. Here are the number of Mastery Points needed for each unlock:

  • 1. skill mastery: 10,000 Mastery Points
  • 2. skill mastery: 15,000 Mastery Points
  • The third skill is mastery: 20,000 Mastery Points
  • The fourth skill of mastery: 25,000 Mastery Points
  • The fifth skill of mastery: 30,000 Mastery Points

This means you’ll need a whopping 100,000 Mastery Points to complete all five specializations, but don’t worry. Since Mastery Points aren’t tied to a specific skill, you’ll quickly accumulate plenty of them by playing the game, allowing you to master all five skills.

What do specializations do in Stardew Valley?

Each skill has a corresponding proficiency, and mastering it unlocks one or two recipes and a fresh passive ability:

You will unlock it Irid Scythea tool enabling harvesting crops by swinging a scythe. Say goodbye to the days of harvesting each crop individually. You will also receive the recipe for Statue of Beatitudeswhich gives random buffs as you interact with it on a daily basis.

The passive ability allows you to find golden animal crackers, which you can give to a farm animal to permanently double the productivity of any farm animal, except pigs.

You will receive two recipes: one for Statue of the Dwarf King and one for massive stove. The statue allows you to choose two power-ups from a list of five, including gaining extra ore, a higher chance of finding things like geodes, coal and ladders, and the ability to be immune to bomb damage. The Heavy Furnace smelts multiple ores into bars at once, conserving ore.

The passive ability allows you to obtain double the amount of gems from rocks filled with gems.

Foraging Mastery gives you two recipes: one for seeds of the mystical tree and one for treasure totem. Mystic tree seeds grow into a mystical tree, which produces mystical syrup (needed for crafting treasure totems and blue grass starters). When used, the Treasure Totem creates a ring of artifact dig sites around you.

The passive ability allows you to find golden mystery boxes, which are essentially the same as regular boxes, although they may contain automatic petters and golden pet crackers inside.

You will get it Advanced iridium rodwhich allows you to hook two bobbers at the same time. You will also receive the recipe for challenge, baitwith which you will catch three fish if you catch them perfectly.

The passive ability allows you to fish out golden fishing treasure chests, which contain more items than regular treasure chests.

You will receive two recipes: one for the anvil, one for the anvil and one for the mini forge. The Anvil allows you to reroll the stats of your trinkets in exchange for three iridium ingots. The mini-forge is a home version of the forge from the volcano dungeon.

The passive ability allows you to equip trinkets.

What is the best skill to master in Stardew Valley?

Honestly, this is neither here nor there, as you can get all five specializations. You should prioritize those that will have an impact your definitely plays. If you spend a lot of time fishing, you should first become a fishing master. If you love Skull Caves, definitely prioritize combat and mining. If you are having difficulty expanding your museum due to missing artifacts, foraging proficiency will assist you.

Ultimately, the choice is yours as none of these specializations will make or break your game. If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably doing pretty well in the valley. (I personally chose to be proficient in farming because the scythe and gold animal crackers have been really useful for what I do Stardew Valleybut mining and fishing were close second choices for me.)
