Ring of Fire‘S Shadow of Erdtree Expansion is just around the corner, which means time is running out to prepare for it.

Shadow of Erdtree it has to be absolutely huge; according to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the expansion will be approximately the size of the Elden Ring starting area, Limgrave. In other words, there’s a lot to discover on June 21, including finding out what happened to the game’s most mysterious demigod – but only if you’re prepared.

If you don’t know how to prepare for the expansion or you simply haven’t played the base game in years, don’t worry. Here’s everything you need to do Ring of Fire before Shadow of Erdtree.

While you don’t To have beat the game to challenge yourself Shadow of Erdtreeyou need to make some progress before you can jump into the game. FromSoftware claims that the upcoming content will be available on a completely up-to-date map, separate from the main game.

To start the DLC, you must defeat Radahn and Mohg, with the latter guarding Miquella’s egg, which is the entry point to the expansion.

We know that Mohg kidnapped Miquella, one of the main characters of the DLC. In the base game, Miquella resides in an egg, which you can interact with after defeating Mohg. Currently, the mummy-like remains do nothing but Shadow of Erdtreesingle trailer shows Miquella’s egg seemingly coming to life.

Apart from its plot importance, there are many other reasons to visit Mohg’s palace before the DLC release. Firstly, the cliffside area preceding the blood-soaked map contains one of the best rune farming areas in the game, thanks to a group of Albinaurs who drop a surprising amount of XP. Mohg probably used them as fodder for his blood god. If you stock up on items that enhance your Runes, such as the Golden Pickled Bird’s Foot and the Golden Scarab talisman, you can apply these enemies to augment your power level in no time.

If you farm enemies repeatedly, you can gain dozens of levels in a matter of minutes. Fortunately, after you kill the albinaurs, you can quickly travel to the beginning of the level to force the game to respawn them all. Be sure to shoot the bird wandering around the bloody lake observable from the cliff – it can’t really hurt you, and it’s a great source of XP.

Learn Miquella’s story

Miquella is mentioned frequently throughout the text Ring of Fire, but you never actually see or speak to the blond Empyrian. And like most Souls games, the overall plot is quite subtle, so it’s entirely possible to not know what’s going on with Miquella – or to miss smaller details that will likely be filled out in DLC. Watching feature videos (like the one above from popular content creator FromSoftware VaatiVidya) is a good way to solve this problem.

Explore the volcanic estate

One of the main topics Shadow of Erdtree seems like blasphemy. After all, Erdtree is associated with lithe and you will be wading in the shadows, potentially after Erdtree is destroyed. The main antagonist of the DLC appears to be related to snakes, which are repeatedly associated with enemies of the faith in the base game.

Then the chances seem good Shadow of Erdtree will make several callbacks to Volcano Manor. The mansion is home to Ryckard, a demigod who betrayed the Golden Order by allowing himself to be devoured by a powerful snake. It seems that Shadow of ErdtreeBig Bad follows a similar path; in the trailer, he asks his unnamed mother if she would really punish someone as cursed as him. While the jury is out on whether this villain is actually another of Miquella’s half-siblings who have fallen out of favor with the family, Volcano Manor’s connection to blasphemous snakes is reason enough to check it out. Perhaps we’re dealing with the same external god in the DLC.
