Sub-city of Kurast is a time attack style dungeon exclusive to Diablo 4first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. Here you’ll dive beneath Kurast, the capital of Nahant, to make your way through the dungeon as quickly as possible, earning time for killing monsters and increasing your reward threshold by earning attunement.
Including Diablo 4 guide, we’ll teach you how to unlock the Kurast Undercity activity, how to upgrade your loot rewards, and how to prevent time from running out.
How to unlock Kurast Undercity in Diablo 4
Kurast Undercity takes place…underneath the town of Kurast, as you might imagine. To unlock this activity, you must first proceed Vessel of Hatred campaign until you reach Kurast and do some work for the council there. This should happen around the time you face the first main boss.
The council member will then teach you how to make a basic version of Kurast Undercity. (You can apply modifiers in the endgame, which we won’t get into here.) As you progress through the questline, you’ll unlock recent districts in which to adventure.
How to gain more time in Kurast Undercity
Kurast Undercity is a time attack dungeon that you’re just starting out with 100 seconds by default. However, to complete the dungeon and get the rewards, you will have to traverse multiple floors of the dungeon to find the boss. If you don’t push past the difficulty level you’re on, this process will almost certainly take you over 100 seconds, which means the dungeon will kick you out and end your run before you can finish.
They are scattered throughout each floor of the dungeon Affected Monsters AND Damaged structures (which usually look like huge hamster wheels). These objects and enemies have an orange hourglass next to their icon on the map. Defeating affected monsters or destroying affected structures refunds your time and may even push you past that initial 100-second timer. However, these are elite monsters and high health structures, so you’ll need to decide if the time you’ll have to spend killing them is worth the time you’ll get back.
Ideally, you’d be able to chain multiple affected monsters at once and deal area damage to kill them all at the same time, so you’ll get a lot of time back rather than spending a lot of it.
How to upgrade your loot box in Kurast Undercity
The whole point of Kurast Undercity – like most attractions in Diablo 4 — is about getting powerful recent loot and continuing to improve your build. If you reach the last floor of the dungeon in time and then kill the boss, you will receive a chest filled with loot. But you can upgrade this loot by completing yours Tuning meter. To receive upgrades as rewards, you must have at least 1 level of attunement.
To escalate your Attunement, which you can stack up to four times, you must activate Lanterns AND Big lanterns while racing up the floors. These lanterns will spawn a horde of monsters that are tied to the lantern itself. If you manage to kill every enemy attached to the Lantern, it will drop a ton of Attunement, which will continually escalate your meter. In our experience, there are more Attunement Beacons and Great Attunement Beacons than are needed to exhaust the Attunement meter, so you can skip some of them and still get decent rewards.
The only thing to remember about Attunement is that it is designed as a trap, which means that the Kurast Undercity activity tries to test your greed. If you’re running out of time, stopping to get more Attunement may cost you your entire run, meaning you get no loot instead of slightly less loot. Try not to be greedy and you can get great rewards while grinding Kurast Undercity.
