There are two shrines near the Yellow Wind Sage, which can be approached from either side. The first is Windseal Gate Temple in the Yellow Wind Formation. The second one is A chapel in the basement in the Crouching Tiger Temple. To fight the boss, enter the massive sandstorm and a cutscene will play.

How to Defeat the Yellow Wind Sage in Black Myth: Wukong

The Yellow Wind Sage will make low work of you if you can’t avoid his attacks, so let’s start with that:

  • Spin Staff: Yellow Wind Sage swings her staff in a semi-circle, swings it wildly, and then slams it into the sand. This move looks faster than it actually is. Avoid the boss’s side, swinging to avoid damage.
  • Sand Fork: Yellow Wind Sage will raise his staff into the air and slam it into the sand, spear head first. This will deal damage and cause forks to explode from the sand in front of him. Duck to the side when you see him holding his staff.

  • Stomp Jump: Yellow Wind Sage can jump into the air and slam his foot down. This deals damage in a petite area. The move is quite swift, but has a very obvious feature – his feet will completely leave the ground. Simply jump away from him to avoid being stepped on.
  • Disconnect: Yellow Wind Sage will swing his stick at you, jumping away. As you punish him, watch his arm drop to his side, holding the stick. When this happens, move away from him, dodging and resetting.
  • Charging combination: When Yellow Wind Sage has some distance on you, he will step forward with a swing of his staff, do a quick combo in front of him, do a jumping backhand slam into the sand, and then do another spin when he lands. All of these moves are avoidable and have a rhythm to them. Watch out for the staff to get close to you and dodge it at the last moment. Stay close to him and you’ll be able to punish when the combo ends.

  • Wind cutting: Yellow Wind Sage will swing his staff in front of him, sending a line of devastating wind towards you. Wait for the projectile to get close to you and either dodge it or jump over it. Note that sometimes he will shoot three at once.
  • Storm rotation: Once the boss gets down to about two-thirds of his health, he’ll do a massive spin around himself that deals damage in an area and summons a storm. These swings are very leisurely, so just avoid them.
  • Echoes recalled: Yellow Wind Sage will sometimes disappear into the storm and send out echoes to fight you. These echoes only do one combo and then leave. Like the boss, you’ll eventually sense these patterns, but watch out for the same thing Yellow Wind Sage does: the stick and feet. You can’t do any damage to these guys, so focus on dodging.
  • The return of Combo: Once both of his Echoes attack, Yellow Wind Sage will jump back into the arena with an attack of her own: a delayed stomp. She gives you plenty of warning before this attack, so back off if your stamina is low, or avoid it for a chance to do some damage.

  • Catching a Punt: One of the most devastating and annoying moves of the Yellow Wind Sage is his grab. He deals a ton of damage with this move before throwing you back to the ground. What’s worse is that the signal is very subtle, as it starts with a petite kick. In the second phase, try to watch his feet and dodge when you see him start kicking instead of stomping.
  • Headless Spear Combo: When the Yellow Wind Sage returns from his adventure in the sands, he’ll be much faster and will operate his hand to summon pitchfork attacks. The combos themselves aren’t all that different—foot stomping and wide staff swings—but you’ll be punished more for not dodging them. Keep an eye on his staff at all times to aid you time your dodge.

  • Beetle summoning: In the second phase, Yellow Wind Sage will occasionally scream, causing a giant sand beetle to fly out of the ground and body slam you. This thing is super scary and hurts a lot, but the window to avoid it is quite long. Avoid a bit earlier than you think you have to, because the shovel is coming towards you.
  • Summoning a tornado: When you reach the bottom quarter of your health bar, Yellow Wind Sage will summon a storm. To do this, he’ll stick his staff in the sand and start spinning his arms. Take advantage of the opportunity to defeat him when he does this, before the arena gets too nasty.
  • The final combination: When the storm comes, Yellow Wind Sage will primarily do a combo that involves a lot of swinging his staff. The bad news is that now you have very little room to dodge and it’s much harder to see him. On the plus side, his glowing spins are noticeable through the sandstorm, so just do your best to dodge.
  • The final call: As the storm heats up, Yellow Wind Sage will once again send out her echoes, which will perform more powerful combos. They can be very challenging to see in the sandstorm, so just watch for the glow of their batons to time your dodge.

Yellow Wind Sage is very aggressive, but all of his moves are fairly predictable. However, the boss is exhausting for several reasons beyond the raw “difficulty” of the fight.

First, it’s very long, which can make death seem even more grueling than usual.

Secondly, the boss has multiple phases where you can’t attack him for a low time, which makes the fight longer and prevents you from fighting back in force, meaning that have to learn its patterns.

Finally, there’s the final phase. During the fight with the Yellow Wind Sage, the storm surrounding the arena shrinks and shrinks. To make matters worse, the boss will summon several mini-tornadoes that will spin around the increasingly smaller arena. This often ends with you juggling the storm and then getting caught in the tornado until you die. The camera doesn’t aid either, as it can be incredibly challenging to see through the storm in the frantic final moments.

You should get really good at it in the first three-quarters of the fight to save all your tricks (and mana) for the end. Before Yellow Wind Sage starts summoning storms, he’s just a mildly annoying boss with a lot of health who hits pretty difficult. But as we mentioned before, his moveset is uncomplicated to learn, and his prompts are pretty obvious. If you’re having trouble with this fight, try to get through it for as long as possible without using any spells—just you, your stick, and the boss.

Once you can reliably reach the final phase, you are in business. If you have seen “random crap go!” meme, channel that energy. As soon as he summons the storm, hit him as difficult as you can. Eventually he’ll jump out and send his echoes after you again. This is a great time to operate the Transform spell to add another bar of health. You can also pull a little Evil Repelling Medicine to boost your defense. When the boss returns, operate Immobilize to stun him, summon your clones with Pluck of Mana, and operate your Spirit Skill to hit him. The goal here isn’t necessarily to be swift — although that helps — but simply to operate all the tools you have left to defeat him at his most tumultuous moment.

Eventually, you’ll either get the hang of this very frustrating dance, or you’ll get lucky and find a good pattern in the storm. Either way, remember that a win is a win. Enjoy your novel relic, a ton of great crafting materials, and the novel nightmares waiting for you in Chapter 3.
